Govt. Policy On Cryptocurrency is Not Clear Yet

 It is a fact, that the Indian administration has been in a state of indecision for quite sometime on trade and use of cryptocurrency in the country. A long-awaited cryptocurrency bill has been presented to Cabinet Union Cabinet and still awaits its approval. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated in the 3rd week of august this year, that she had got the draft prepared regarding cryptocurrency (bill) and was waiting for the Cabinet to sign the bill. In the past, an inter-ministerial committee headed by Secretary (Economic Affairs) had also submitted their report regarding cryptocurrency. At present, cryptocurrency is subject to no regulations in India, and therefore, it is an area of uncertainty for Indian users and investors equally.

The central government has established the inter-ministerial committee on cryptocurrency to look into the issues associated with digital currencies. According to reports, the panel suggested that all private cryptocurrencies be banned in India. But, the virtual currency that the government issues could be permitted. In the Monsoon session of the Parliament, Bill was scheduled to be introduced; however, it could not for the reasons unknown.

According to the announcement to the Budget Session prepared by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the bill "seeks to prohibit all private cryptocurrencies in India." However, it permits certain exceptions to increase awareness of the technology behind cryptocurrency and its use.

In  April 2018, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued an advisory that advised "all the entities regulated by it not to deal in" cryptocurrency. However, in 2020 the Supreme Court lifted the central bank's ban on cryptocurrency and permitted banks and financial institutions to offer services, even if they were connected to digital currencies.

In May 2021, the deputy governor of RBI declared that they were examining options to launch a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC). The cryptocurrency bill may help private stakeholders with the much required roadmap to deal in Crypto space. 

Cryptocurrencies are virtual or digital currencies that are gaining popularity with Indian investors. They basically alter the central bank's system of transaction and trading. Indians have made investments of more than $6 million in cryptocurrency. Around 1.5 million Indians are believed to have made such investments. A few hundred startups have launched in the cryptocurrency and blockchain area.
